Dear Kindergarten Families,
I am so exited to be your child's kindergarten teacher this year. I have so many exciting activities planned to promote your child's curiosity and love of learning. I will update this website weekly to keep you updated on what is going on in Room 6. I am looking forward to a fabulous year with your child!
Fondly,
Mrs. Sweeney

Our Kindergarten Workshops:
Reader's Workshop:
-Practicing writing the letters using the proper kindergarten letter formation, Making the letter sounds associated with each letter.
-Learning new sight words: A, I, go, we, like, my, is, the, can
-Independent reading: Looking at pictures is reading! In addition, we have learned to use our "Eagle Eye" to look for picture clues and look at the beginning sound when trying to read a new word.
~ Buddy Reading: Students take turns reading their "just right books" to a buddy reader.
~ Sorting pictures by their beginning sound and writing the word by "S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G" the word and writing the sounds.
~ Writing the beginning letter sounds of words and then stretching the word.
Writer's Workshop: This month, we are returning to opinion writing. We will be reading 3 different books about Harry The Dirty Dog, and we will state our opinion on different aspects of each story. We are continuing to use "phonemic spelling" to sound out words and write down what we hear. We are also working hard to spell sight words correctly and remember to use correct capitalization, spacing and punctuation.
Math Workshop:We are beginning Module 3:
Comparison of Length, Weight,
Capacity, and Numbers to 10
Focus Grade Level Standards
Compare numbers.
K.CC.6 Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the
number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies. (Include
groups with up to 10 objects.)
K.CC.7 Compare two numbers between 1 and 10 presented as written numerals.
Describe and compare measurable attributes.
K.MD.1 Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several
measurable attributes of a single object.
K.MD.2 Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, to see which object has
“more of”/“less of” the attribute, and describe the difference. For example, directly compare
the heights of two children and describe one child as taller/shorter.
Foundational Standards
PK.CC.5 Identify whether the number of objects in one group is more, less, greater than, fewer, and/or
equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting
strategies.1
PK.CC.6 Identify “first” and “last” related to order or position.
PK.MD.1 Identify measurable attributes of objects, such as length and weight. Describe them using
correct vocabulary (e.g., small, big, short, tall, empty, full, heavy, and light).
Focus Standards for Mathematical Practice
MP.2 Reason quantitatively and abstractly. Students
compare quantities by drawing objects in columns and
matching the objects one to one to see that one
column has more than another and draw the
conclusion that 6 is more than 4 because 2 objects do
not have a match.
MP.3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Students describe
measurable attributes of a single object and reason about how to compare its length, weight,
and volume to that of another object.
MP.5 Use appropriate tools strategically. During the culminating task and End-of-Module
Assessment, students might choose to use a scale to compare weight, linking cube sticks to
compare length and rice and cups to compare volume.

Please be sure to send your child's purple folder to school each day. This folder will travel back and forth daily, please be sure to check it for important notices and amazing kindergarten work!
Extra Clothes:
If you haven't done so already, please send in an extra set of weather appropriate clothes labeled with your child's name and an extra mask as well.

Lunch will be at 11:10 each day. Your child may bring lunch from home or get lunch from the cafeteria, there is no charge at this time. You can view the menu on the CPS website.
Ice Cream
The cafeteria will now be offering ice cream for $1.00 on Thursday and Friday each week. Payments may be made via My School Bucks or with cash at the time of purchase.
*Please let me know if your child is getting hot lunch for the first time so we can assist them through the process.
Birthday Celebrations:
Birthdays are very special occasions for children. You are more than welcome to read a book to the class via Google Meet. For children who have a summer birthday, we will celebrate them at the end of the school year. Due to dietary restrictions and allergies, please do not send in any birthday snacks for the class. The school also requests that birthday invitations are not distributed in school unless the entire class is invited.
